No landmark speaks of Duluth, Minnesota as soundly as the aerial lift bridge, connecting the 'mainland' with Park Point. Constructed in 1905, it is one of only two ever built in the United States, and its design is unique. When a ship of any size (from a 27 foot pleasure cruiser to a 700 foot ore carrier) comes in or out of the harbor, traffic across the bridge is halted and the bottom center piece lifts straight up to allow the vessel safe passage.
